chewing gum gum base

Chewing gum can seem like a simple treat, but it has many diverse elements that make it work! The core of gum is known as gum base — it is what turns gum into challenging and fun chewing gum. We wouldn’t have the same chewing experience without gum base.

There are many ingredients that are used to make gum base. An especially important component is a tacky material called natural rubber. This rubber is derived from the bark of certain trees. So the workers carefully tap it from the trees. Once they gather it, they treat it with special chemicals that assist in converting it into a moldable and usable material.

From Sticky Sap to Versatile Ingredien

Different types of gum base, in addition to natural rubber, can be used. These can include waxes, oils and chicle, a unique sap that originates from trees in Central America. The trees are also "bleed" to collect the chicle which adds chewiness and flavor to the gum.

So what is it about gum base that makes it so special and important? When you eat a piece of gum, your teeth and jaw compress it. This pressure causes the gum to stretch and flatten while chewching on it. Gum base is what holds the gum together and prevents it from falling apart when chewed!
