It is important to note that not every ingredient of gum base is a natural one. Some are anthropogenic or synthetic. Certain types of gum base, for example, may include polyethylene, a type of plastic. This may be weird, but polyethylene is a common gum base ingredient. But don't panic, its safe to eat and won't hurt you!
So, how does gum base work? It’s a matter of science and how materials interact differently! Polymers are lengthy molecules that are bonded together, and they are in each gum that effects the texture of the gum. The elastomers we talked about earlier are a flexible kind of polymer that can be stretched and then return to their original form, similar to rubber bands. When you chew gum, the elastomers in gum base stretch out as your teeth and jaw work on it. Then, when the chewing stops, the elastomers revert back to their original shape, and the gum texturing becomes chewy once more.
Finally, fillers are included to reduce the stickiness of the gum and to add bulk to it. While they don’t actually contribute to the chewing texture of the gum, they help to give you something to hold onto as well as making it less messy when you chew.
