gum base made of

Ever wonder what chewing gum is made of? When we chew gum, we typical spit it out when finished but what really happens to said gum? It doesn’t vanish into thin air! The gum base, which is responsible for the chewiness of the gum, consists of multiple ingredients that combine to form a collection.

Gum Base: The key ingredient in chewing gum. It’s what gives gum its stretchy, sticky quality. This means that gum base is a combination of various different materials. Some major components are the sugar and corn syrup, which contribute to sweetening the gum. There are also varieties of natural and synthetic rubber that help give gum its signature texture. Other ingredients: resin (increases the gum’s stickiness), wax (provides smoothness) and emulsifiers (help them mix together). All these components work together to form the unique gum base that we all love.

The Science Behind Gum Base Formation

It is produced by marrying all ingredients together and cooking down the gum base. As they heat up, the ingredients melt together into a thick sticky lump. They may heat and blend the ingredients differently for each gum; nevertheless, they will all form the same stretchy chewable consistency we can't help but chomp down on. This heating method is critical: it is used to allow the ingredients to mix thoroughly — and, through process of oxygen release, to develop into the gum base you are familiar with.
