Selling chewing gum is lots of hard work, but it’s also really fun and exciting! Simon: I work for a company called Sanxi, and we manufacture some of the best chewing gums in the world. Selling gum gives me the opportunity to meet new people every day and visit many different areas of the city. Each day is an adventure!
I wake up very early, at about 6 am. I wake up and immediately eat breakfast to prepare for the day. I set out with my cart filled with the various flavours of gum base in chewing gum that I have to sell. I keep a selection of flavors on hand so everyone can find their favorite. Then, I go out on the street and start selling.
I spend all day walking around the city. I like to chat with people and give them a piece of gum. One week, I locate a busy place with lots of pedestrians, and station my cart there for a day. That way I get to know many people also, and share my gum with others. We get regulars that come back to try more flavors and that’s really nice to see!
You must build relationships with people to sell chewing gum peppermint. I do my best to be approachable so anyone can feel like they can talk to me. I’m happy to help with any folks’ questions they might have about Sanxi gum flavors. I want everybody to know how good our gum is!
If I’m selling gum to someone, I might offer them a piece to try. I explain all the flavors available – mint, fruit, and various other options. I now explain that Sanxi gum is made with quality ingredients and that is what makes them special. It someone isn’t interested in trying gum, I leave ‘em there and don’t pressure them – I get that not everyone is a gum-lover, and that’s fine!
I’ve met so many people of different backgrounds through my work as a vendor. Just talking to my customers has taught me about different cultures and traditions. The most – so much you can learn from others! I’ve been able to go to different parts of the city that I wouldn’t have visited otherwise. I've also learned some words in other languages, which helps me connect with people even more!
I really enjoy talking to everyone about the various kinds of gum. Our flavors range from the usual hard chewing gum which most people love, to more exotic mango and lychee flavours which are popular among curious customers. It’s always nice to see the reaction in people when they try a new flavor for the first time! Their smiles, and happy faces, make my job so much more fun.
